If you've heard of Reiki but aren't quite sure what it is — you're not alone. It's one of the most talked-about yet least understood healing modalities. Let me walk you through it, simply and honestly.
The Word Itself
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word made of two characters: Rei, meaning "universal" or "spiritual wisdom," and Ki, meaning "life energy." Together, Reiki means "universally guided life energy."
The practice was developed in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, after a profound spiritual experience on Mount Kurama. Since then, it has spread across the world and is now used in hospitals, hospices, wellness centres, and private practices globally.
What Actually Happens in a Session?
During a Reiki session, the practitioner channels universal life energy through their hands, either by gently placing them on or just above different areas of the body. The energy flows wherever it is needed — the practitioner is simply a conduit.
You remain fully clothed, lying comfortably on a treatment table. Sessions typically last 45–75 minutes. Many people feel a gentle warmth, tingling, or a deep sense of relaxation. Some see colours. Some drift into a peaceful, dream-like state. Some simply feel very, very still.
What Does Reiki Actually Do?
Physical — It promotes deep relaxation, which supports the body's natural ability to heal. Many people report reduced pain, better sleep, and improved energy levels.
Emotional — Stored emotional energy — grief, anger, fear, old wounds — can begin to release gently and safely. Many people find themselves crying during or after a session, not from sadness, but from release.
Mental — The constant noise of the thinking mind quiets. Clarity arrives. People often gain insight or perspective on situations that had felt impossible to navigate.
Spiritual — There is often a sense of connection — to something larger than oneself, to peace, to purpose. Many describe it as "coming home to themselves."
Is It Safe?
Yes. Reiki is gentle, non-invasive, and has no known side effects. It complements — and never replaces — medical treatment. In fact, many hospitals and cancer centres now include Reiki as part of integrative care because of its powerful supportive benefits.
Do I Need to "Believe" in It?
No. Reiki works regardless of belief. It is not a religion, and it has no dogma. Sceptics and believers alike often leave sessions feeling the same thing: lighter, calmer, and more themselves.
Who Can Benefit?
Anyone. Reiki is safe for children, adults, the elderly, pregnant women, and those going through illness or recovery. It is particularly beneficial for those experiencing stress, anxiety, burnout, grief, physical pain, or a desire for deeper self-awareness and spiritual growth.
